Description:
The Srebarna Nature Reserve is a freshwater lake adjacent to the Danube, some 18 km west of Silistra. It is extending over 600 ha, plus 540 ha buffer zone. The water depth varies between 1-3 meters and it is reedy. The lake is located on the Via Pontica, a bird migration route between Europe and Africa. It serves as breeding ground of almost 100 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered. Some 80 other bird species migrate and seek refuge here every winter. Among the most interesting bird species are the Dalmatian pelican, great egret, night heron, purple heron, glossy ibis and white spoonbill. It is breeding ground of67 species of higher plants, 39 mammal, 21 reptile and about 10 fish species.
Аround the Srebarna lake a tour path is constructed to allow better view for visitors, without having to disturb the natural habitats. There is also a museum, where a collection of stuffed species typical for the reserve is arranged.
Since 1983 Sreberna is in UNESCO's World Heritage List.
