Description:
The town of Silistra is situated on the Danube River, some 443 km from Sofia, at an altitude of 20 m. The eastern neighbourhoods of the town reach the state border with Romania. The population is 41 952. The town is a terminal station on the Samuil-Silistra railroad. It is also a port and a center of an agriculturalk area. The headquarters of the Dorostol bishop are located in Silistra. Srebarna Natural Reserve is not far from the town. The Suha Reka ("Dry River") area is in the vicinity where unique caves are spread throughout.
The ancient town of Durostorum was established in the 1st century on the foundations of a Thracian settlement. It is mentioned in a decree issued by the Roman Emperor Trajan for moving there the 11th Claudius's legion. Durostorum (Dorostol) became a municipal (a self-governing city) in 169 AD. There are many Roman landmarks in the town and in its suburbs. The Slav tribes that settled here in the 6th century changed the name of the town of "Drustur". It has been an important Bulgarian stronghold and port, and after the Christianization it became a bishop's seat. One of the earliest crosses on Bulgarian lands (used in the burial of a local saint) has been found there. Under the rule of Tsar Simeon the Bishop of Silistra has been proclaimed a Patriarch of the Bulgarian Church. The Patriarh Dammyan - the last Patriarh in Drustur, left the town and moved to Ohrid when Bulgaria fell under the Byzantine rule. In 1204 Silistra became the bishop's seat. The Drustur fortress was taken by the Turks in 1391. During the National Revival period the town was a center of trade and crafts. In 2001 the diocese of Drostol was restored within the boundaries of Silistra ecclesiastical district.
As far as Bulgarian cities go, Silistra has a fairly typical center with government buildings, shops, banks, a newly remodeled park along the river, and Turkish and Roman ruins scattered throughout the city. There is a border crossing that is serviced by a ferry, which costs about the equivalent of about 50 cents to cross the river into Romania. The Danube River Garden is a peaceful and beautiful spot to spend an afternoon, sitting on the benches, watching the river and people go by. It was rebuilt with funds from The Beautiful Bulgaria Project, which is funded mainly by the European Union.
Cultural landmarks: History Museum (archeological finds from Roman times, golden funeral hearses); Ethnographic Museum, displaying South Dobrudzha material and spiritual culture of the 18th and 19th centuries; the museum is located in the former town-hall building from the Ottoman period, built in the 17th century; Durostorum-Drusur-Silistra architectural and archeological reserve, covering almost 2/3 of the town and including unique Roman and medieval Bulgarian artifacts; Silistra tomb of the late Antiquity (late 4th century AD) with magnificent wall paintings; Medzhit Tabiya fortress, dating back to 1841-1853, which hosts the archeological exhibition of the History Museum; the Holy Trinity Church (1829); Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (1862); Danubian park with exotic ligneous species; Monastery of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God, near the village of Aidemir, established in 1996 around the existing church there.
